The development, creation, premiere & tour of 'Can I Start Again Please' compelled me for nearly four years. Nadia Nadarajah and I performed the play 59 times in venues across the United Kingdom. It won the Total Theatre award for 'Innovation, Creation & Playing with Form' at the Edinburgh Fringe 2015 and received positive critical acclaim from both audiences and critics, with Lyn Gardner from The Guardian describing it as '...devastating and devastatingly good'.
'Can I Start Again Please' was, however, about much more than just the performances, it was about giving British Sign Language the creative status it deserves, about welcoming Deaf people into spaces they have never visited before, about the post-show discussion & audience engagement and about the team of collaborators, both onstage and off, who enabled the piece to be as successful as it was.
I wanted all that captured and so decided to make a film that could be utilised as both an enjoyable-to-watch documentary and an education tool. I directed the film and co edited it with our cameraman Bim Adjani with input from Jane McMorrow and Mark Schofield. This 30 minute film is the result. I hope you enjoy it.
